“Not only did you make me look better and more professional than I ever thought I could look, you gave me confidence and the ladies that also helped me prepare for my interview were super nice and helpful. I believe all of you played a major part in me getting the job, so thank you.”
Smart Works Reading is proud to have a wonderful team of over 70 regular volunteers who deliver our services to hundreds of clients a year.
All our volunteers are professional, dedicated, and treat our clients, colleagues and other volunteers with respect and understanding.
If you would like to become a Smart Works Reading volunteer, we will ask you to make a regular commitment and complete our professional onboarding programme. We can work with you on timing and regularity of your volunteering and role to ensure its best fits with your skills and time.
You will benefit from regular training, the opportunity to learn new skills and the chance to meet interesting and like-minded people.
We currently have volunteering opportunities in:
- Project management
- Graphic design
- Media & comms
Please contact us for more information on any of these roles. If our core volunteering roles are full we are happy to add you to our waiting list. However we’d still love to welcome you as a volunteer in another area while we wait for a coaching or dressing place to become available.
Padma Knowles, volunteer interview coach
“I have proudly volunteered for Smart Works Reading for almost three years now. When I set up my own recruitment business, I really felt strongly about giving back. I came across Smart Works Reading and loved their ethos of empowering and helping women get back into work – a subject very close to my heart. I love that I am helping people to get back on their feet and find their independence again. Volunteering has genuinely enriched my life far more than I could have ever imagined!”
Melanie Prater, volunteer head of stock
“Smart Works Reading is a wonderful charity that helps women at such an important stage of lives, when they are feeling low and vulnerable, and lifts them up to empower them to become more than they ever thought they could be. I use some of my skills as a chartered accountant, but also have to use a totally different skill set as well as learning new ones. The staff and the other volunteers are really great to work with and there is a good energy in the office.”

If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer we would love to hear from you. There isn’t one type of person who volunteers at Smart Works and we’re always looking for diversity of thought and experience, if you have a passion for empowering women and believe that you have what it takes to make a difference we want to hear from you.
Please bear with us, we take our volunteer recruitment very seriously and it might take a little while for one of the team to get back to you.
