We are delighted to announce that our winter fundraising event at Henley’s prestigious Leander Club raised almost £6000 to support unemployed women across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire in their journey to employment success.
Over 80 guests enjoyed welcome fizz while browsing the Smart Works Sale Rails and accessories at the sell-out event, which featured an inspiring conversation with Olympic silver medallist Victoria Thornley, who shared insights about the athlete’s mindset and her transition to running a family business. The evening also included a moving discussion between Smart Works client Diane Bak and our Chair Helen Francis, highlighting Diane’s successful career change in her fifties.
“The journey from athlete to entrepreneur has taught me valuable lessons about resilience and adaptation,” said Victoria Thornley. “Learning to listen to your body and recognise when to pause is crucial – it’s a lesson that applies whether you’re an Olympic athlete or running a business.”
Helen Francis, Chair of Smart Works Reading, commented: “Tonight’s tremendous success, raising nearly £6000, demonstrates our community’s incredible support for women seeking employment. Diane’s story perfectly illustrates that it’s never too late to make a career change when you have the right support network behind you.”
The event’s success was made possible through generous community support, including complimentary venue provision by Leander Club and audio-visual services from Show State. A combination of raffle prizes, magic tree prizes, and silent auction items contributed to the substantial funds raised.
These funds will help Smart Works Reading continue providing its free job interview coaching and clothing service to unemployed women in the community.
